Complete December 2023
Mental health is not talked about in South Asian communities and there is a lot of stigmas attached which create barriers for women in culturally and religiously diverse communities in accessing help.
On 8 March 2021, the government launched a 14-week call for evidence to inform the development of the Women’s Health Strategy for England which is in its second year since inception.
It is welcoming to note that mental health has been identified as a crucial priority within the Women’s Health Strategy for England. Notably, in the call for evidence survey, 39% of respondents ranked it among the top 5 topics, underscoring the need to address disparities in access to and experiences of mental healthcare, especially for women from ethnic minority backgrounds.
It has been a pleasure to be bringing the findings from our two focus groups in Newcastle and Gateshead as there is no better time to talk about issues that affect women from these least advantaged communities who have experienced health inequalities.
