  • Understanding is really important to us here at Tyneside Mind. The more we understand the more we can help.

In July we will be launching a new project with the Northumbria University, which will enable us to measure many of the physiological functions that can occur in conjunction with changes to thoughts, emotions and behaviour.

Using a Biofeedback machine we will be able to monitor brainwaves, heart function, breathing, muscle activity and skin temperature, enabling us to see the effects of mental health on the entire body.

Biofeedback can be a really effective treatment technique, as people are able to observe signals generated by their own bodies, signals that usually occur involuntarily.

Learning to control and respond to abnormal measurements in involuntary function with specific therapeutic actions such as muscle relaxation, meditation, or changing breathing patterns, can help people to find a really effective coping mechanism for many mental health issues.

We are delighted to be working with the Northumbria University, and hope that our research will not only help many of the people at Tyneside Mind, but also aid in gaining a greater understanding of mental health across the UK.
