Many people begin the New Year with resolutions made with the very best of intentions. Banning unhealthy habits like booze or smoking, cutting down on added sugars or salt, and trying to embed healthy habits by signing up for weekly swimming or Zumba classes. It’s believed that by the third Monday of the year we really begin to struggle with these goals and doubt ourselves. So much attention has surrounded this time of year we’ve come to know it as ‘Blue Monday’.

You may think that Blue Monday is a real phenomenon at this point, but it’s important that you don’t doubt yourself. Simply put, Blue Monday was invented in a press release in 2005 as part of a marketing campaign using a collection of invalid variables to back up their claims. You can read more about the ‘science’ behind the ‘January Blues’ by The Happiness Index here.
The concept of ‘Blue Monday’ can actually create a placebo response, where we anticipate a downturn in our confidence and ability to achieve our goals because of all the attention to its supposed mythical impact.
It’s true that the New Year buzz that inspired you to make some big and small changes will have probably faded, leaving you feeling fatigued by the cold, dark January. Yet that doesn’t negate your ability to power through. There’s actual scientific evidence suggesting that a healthy habit can form by the three week mark. Which means by getting over this hurdle you’re one step closer to long-term change. It’s hard combating the ‘Blue Monday’ marketing but essential you recognise that the scientific proof behind the dark day is simply a myth!
We recommend maintaining momentum by giving yourself some grace and kindness around this time. Already you’ve been at your new habit for a few weeks and that is something to celebrate. Take each day at a time and don’t be discouraged by a slip up here and there! Starting from scratch can feel more monumental than simply recognising a dip in your productivity and powering through. So next time you skip a workout class, sneak out for a cigarette, or indulge in a takeaway, accept it and move on!
